Ken Kantro of Lovell Designs

Ken Kantro was born and raised in New York City and has called Maine his home for over thirty years. After receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees in History, Ken pursued a parallel interest in Eastern Philosophy and the simple straightforward art it inspires. An apprenticeship with a Japanese potter taught him the techniques and aesthetics of the Far East. As Ken Kantros work became design intensive in the early eighties, his reputation grew. He has received many special commissions and honors, among them the American Pewter Guild Design Award for 1983. Experimenting with clay and metal combinations, Ken became fascinated the the flowing, light-reflecting quality of metal. He had found what was for him the most expressive medium. Ken spent years mastering all the techniques of holloware design and became well-known throughout New England for his functional metalwork. Many have travelled to watch him work in the barn on his old farm in Lovell or in his shop on the wharf when he lived in Damariscotta.
